PRB: DEVPRNT causes a DR Watson error

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax 5.5 and later


Automatic printing of faxes causes Dr Watson error in DEVPRNT.EXE and in extreme cases causes the system to blue screen.


The print device configured for automatic printing of faxes has been physically removed, is unavailable or the print queue is corrupt. Zetafax will continue to use the settings that have been configured for the server and each user.

Zetafax users can be configured to use a different printer from the server default. If this printer is removed, unavailable or the queue is corrupt then automatic printing will fail.


The print device configured for automatic printing of faxes will need to be removed. Follow the instructions below to achieve this:

  1. Stop the Zetafax server service if it is running.
  2. Launch Windows Explorer and navigate to zfax\system\z-db, where 'zfax' is the name of the directory where the Zetafax server files are installed.
  3. Open SETUP.INI and locate PrintRecdDevice: and PrintSentDevice: in the [PRINTING] section and remove any incorrect print device. Save and close the file.
  4. Open USERLIST.INI and locate PrintRecdDevice: and PrintSentDevice:, remove any incorrect printers for each user.


This has been identified by Equisys as a problem with the software versions given above.
