PRB: "Addressing commands only allowed on first page of fax" appears, and then fax shot terminates

ID: ZTN1406

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax 9.0, 9.0.300 SP1
  • Microsoft Office

While sending fax shots or multiple faxes to the Zetafax printer from Microsoft Word or related Office product, a dialog appears as below. Once the user has clicked OK, nothing seems to happen and the fax sending terminates.

This occurs because of the way the embedded addressing commands are sent from applications such as Word to the Zetafax printer. Sometimes the %%[SEND] embedded command is sent through character by character, and the Zetafax printer fails to recognise that this is actually a complete embedded command. It will then receive the next page's addressing information, and abort the fax job as it has not received a SEND or PREVIEW command first.

WARNING: This resolution requires using the registry editor. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows to correct them, so please exercise caution when doing so.

  1. The workaround for the problem is to highlight the %%[SEND] command, and then change the font or put the whole text in bold. Save the document. This will then ensure that Word sends the text through as a complete block of text, rather than individual characters.
  2. From version 9.0.302 of the Zetafax printer (7 September 2004) the problem can be resolved by adding the following registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Equisys/Zetafax/EmbeddedCommandTag (REG_SZ)

and giving it a value of # or ^ or some similar single character which should be used to indicate embedded commands in the document. Note it is important that this character is only used for embedded commands, as the Zetafax printer will always try to interpret instances of that character as an embedded command tag. Note also that the Zetafax printer will still recognise the usual %%[ tag, and in fact the tags can be intermingled in the same document.

In all cases, the closing bracket ] should still be used.

This has been identified by Equisys as a problem with the software versions given above.
