FIX: Zetafax Exchange Online Connector cannot connect to Exchange Online

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax 2012 with the Zetafax Exchange Online Connector


As part of configuring Zetafax Exchange Online connector you are required to test the connection to your Exchange Online account. When testing the connection a status message is displayed which says that the connection failed.


Recent upgrades by Microsoft of Exchange Online caused a bug in the Exchange Online Connector to be exposed.


There is a hotfix available from Equisys Technical support which resolves this issue.

Installation Instructions
  1. Stop the Zetafax Server.
  2. Backup the following files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Zetafax Server\MAIL” folder.
    • Exchauth.dll
    • Exchonl.dll
  3. Copy the files from the hotfix package into “C:\Program Files (x86)\Zetafax Server\MAIL” (or the equivalent install path) and replace the existing files.
    • Exchauth.dll
    • Exchonl.dll
  4. Copy the “Exchange Online Register.cmd” file to the Zetafax Server machine desktop.
  5. Run “Exchange Online Register.cmd” file. Verifying that it successfully registers the newly dropped dll’s above.
  6. Follow the instructions for configuring Zetafax Exchange Online to complete Exchange Online Email Gateway setup.
  7. Ensure that “Test Connection” is successful.
  8. Restart the Zetafax Server.

If the problem persists then your Exchange Online account may be using an older version of Exchange. To instruct Zetafax to use an older Exchange Online connection you must add a setting to the “Driver.ini” file. We suggest that you try “Exchange2010” and work your way up until you get a valid connection test.

  1. Open “C:\Program Files (x86)\Zetafax Server\MAIL\Data” (or the equivalent install path).
  2. In the Exchange Online section [ExchangeOnline] add the setting:
    • “ExchVer=< exchangeversion> ” where < exchangeversion> is one of the following:
      • Exchange2010
      • Exchange2010_SP1
      • Exchange2010_SP2
      • Exchange2013
    • E.g. “ExchVer=Exchange2010”
  3. Save the file and retry the connection test.


This behaviour was corrected in the latest version of the Zetafax Exchange Online Connector.
