FIX: Installing Zetafax Client on Windows 8.1 fails with unrecognised Windows version error
This Zetafax technical note applies to:
- Zetafax 2012 Platform Feature Pack or earlier
- Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2
On running the Zetafax Client Applications setup program on a computer running Windows 8.1 (or Windows Server 2012 R2), the setup program displays an error saying “Unrecognised Windows version” then exits without completing the installation.
The Zetafax Client Applications setup program checks the version number of Windows to determine which printer drivers should be installed.
Unlike previous minor updates, Windows 8.1 has a different software version number to Windows 8. The Zetafax Client Applications setup program which was included in the Zetafax 2012 Platform Feature Pack and earlier releases does not recognise the new version number, and so treats this as an unrecognised major Windows version.
The Windows Client Update for Zetafax 2012 includes an updated version of the Zetafax Client Applications setup program which recognises Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 correctly.
Customers running Zetafax 2012 with Windows 8 computers should install the Zetafax Windows Client Update to add support for Windows 8.1. Customers running older Zetafax versions which do not support Windows 8 will need to upgrade to Zetafax 2012 with the Platform Feature Pack before installing this update.
Windows 8.1 is scheduled for release from 17th October 2013. Computers using Windows 8 may be upgraded to Windows 8.1 automatically after that date via the Windows update service. It is recommended that customers using Zetafax with Windows 8 client computers install the Windows Client Update before that date, to prevent Zetafax users experiencing issues.
Note: The information and resolution steps given above for Windows 8.1 also apply to Windows Server 2012 R2.
This issue was corrected in the Windows Client Update for Zetafax 2012.
