PRB: "Configured identity is invalid" error initializing the Zetafax API on a machine with Web client components

Symptom

When initializing the Zetafax API COM component from a custom application, you may receive the following error:

This occurs on a machine where the Zetafax Web client has been installed.

Cause

Under normal circumstances, the ZFAPI32.DLL containing Zetafax's COM library is registered separately and runs as the current user. However, if the Zetafax Web Client has been installed on the same machine, the ZFAPI32 library is part of the 'Zetafax Web Components' component in Components Services (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools).

The above error occurs when this package is configured to use an invalid identity.

Resolution

Open the properties of the 'Zetafax Web Components' component in COM Components and click on the Identity tab. Ensure that this is either set to "Interactive user - the current logged on user" or to a valid user with access to the ZFAX folder on the Zetafax Server.
