This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax version 2006 or later

Summary

This document explains how Zetafax determines what information is displayed in the "Fax received from" field in Outlook.

More information

When the Zetafax server receives a fax, the device controller will make information regarding the call available to the program. Zetafax can use the caller's information (if available) to route the received fax and display it in the "Fax received from ." field in the Zetafax client or Outlook Inbox. It can also use this information to determine if the fax is designated as Junk (see the Zetafax Online Help for details on configuring the Junk Fax Filter).

This information typically includes the caller's fax machine's fax number (CSID) and phone line display information (CLI). In most situations these numbers are the same and may only differ on whether they include the International or National access codes.

The Zetafax client can be used to set an alias for the fax number, (Tools | Name of Sender.) so that a user friendly version is displayed, e.g. Acme Inc. or Sales Department. Name of sender can be set only on the CSID.

When CSID is available it takes precedence over CLI (see note on SenderIDOrder below). If the CSID is missing, the Zetafax client will display the CLI instead. However, CLI is not presented to the email gateway, so instead three question marks ??? are displayed in Outlook. The following table helps explains what is displayed depending on the fax client being used:

Zetafax client and Web client

Outlook client

CLI, no CSID

CLI

???

CLI and CSID

CSID or Name of sender if set

CSID

NOTE: It is possible to change the routing preference of CSID to CLI by adding the SenderIDOrder line to the Zetafax configuration (see zfax\SYSTEM\Z-DB\SETUP.WRI for more information). If set, SenderIDOrder will change the way faxes are routed, but will only affect the display of the alias (Name of sender feature). The CSID, when available will still be used for display purposes.
