Brooktrout fax boards are being discontinued
What Zetafax customers need to know
Enghouse has announced the discontinuation of its Brooktrout physical fax boards, marking the beginning of a transition away from dedicated fax hardware.
For Zetafax customers currently using Brooktrout boards, there is no immediate cause for concern, but this is a good time to review your long-term fax strategy.
In this article, we explain what is changing, what it means for existing deployments and the options available moving forward.
What's changing?
Enghouse has confirmed that Brooktrout physical fax boards, associated cables and support plans are being discontinued.
Importantly, Brooktrout SR140 Fax over IP (FoIP) software is not affected by this announcement.
Key dates
- Last order date for Brooktrout fax boards: 30 December 2026, subject to availability. Products may become unavailable earlier if inventory is exhausted.
- Software and technical support for the discontinued hardware: available until 29 March 2030, provided a valid support plan remains in place.
- Last date to purchase a 3-year support plan: 29 March 2027.
- Last date to purchase a 1-year support plan: 29 March 2029.
Does this affect my existing Zetafax installation?
No.
Existing Brooktrout boards will continue to operate as they do today, and customers with valid support plans can continue receiving software and technical support through to 29 March 2030.
However, organizations should be aware that replacement hardware will become increasingly difficult to obtain as stocks are depleted.
What are my options?
Option 1: Continue using your existing Brooktrout boards
Continuing to use existing Brooktrout hardware may be the right short-term approach for some customers.
If choosing this route, we recommend:
- Ensuring support remains active
- Reviewing your hardware resilience requirements and consider procuring a spare Brooktrout board while stock remains available
Option 2: Move to Fax over IP
Many organizations are taking this opportunity to modernize their fax infrastructure by moving to the Zetafax FoIP Connector with Brooktrout SR140.
Unlike physical fax boards, SR140 operates entirely in software and integrates with existing telephony infrastructure using SIP and FoIP technologies.
Benefits include:
- No physical fax board hardware
- Simplified server deployments
- Better support for virtualized environments
- Easier disaster recovery planning
- Reduced dependence on specialist hardware
- Alignment with modern telephony platforms
Why act now?
Many organizations still rely on fax for critical communications, particularly within healthcare, legal, manufacturing and public sector environments.
As hardware availability reduces, organizations should consider:
- How they would recover from a hardware failure
- Whether spare boards are required to minimize business risk
- The long-term cost of maintaining legacy fax hardware
